On Tuesday, July 3, 2007, Southern Tier Celebrates! in
partnership with Senator Tom Libous and

annual Pops concert, featuring the
Binghamton Philharmonic,
taking place this year in the Broome County Arena.
Led by conductor Jose-Luis
Novo, the Philharmonic will be joined by guest artist Angel Desai. Currently
making her Broadway debut in the hit musical “Company”, Angel, a 1990 Binghamton
High School graduate, graced local stages as First Chair Violinist with the
Binghamton Youth Symphony, and was also a featured vocalist with the BHS Jazz
Combo that toured our sister city of Borrovichi, of the former Soviet Union in
1989. She has performed in several Off-Broadway productions, as well as
recurring TV & film roles on Law & Order, The Education of Max Bickford, &
Heights, among others. Welcome Home, Angel!
Pops in the Arena begins at 6:30pm with performances by
New Orleans Jazz and Mardi Gras specialists, The Basin Street Dixieland Jazz
Band, and a quartet featuring 2007 graduates of Binghamton High School's Rod
Serling School of the Art's, Perfect Fifth. The Binghamton Philharmonic
takes the stage at 8:00 pm for a rousing, patriotic celebration.

Around the World and Home Again! We’re visiting Ethiopia,
Central and Latin America & Eastern Europe, featuring a whirl of fantastic music
that will have you dancing and feeling good!
Svitanya Eastern European Women's Vocal Ensemble

Soaring angelic melodies, distinctive harmonies,
and seductive rhythms blend with eye-catching costumes and traditional
music. Most songs are performed a cappella. Drawn from the entire region
of Eastern Europe, encompassing the Slavic, Baltic, Balkan and Southern
Caucasus areas, their repertoire ranges from field-working songs to
dance tunes and love songs.
Kiflu Kidane and New Nile Orchestra

Ethiopian singer/dancer Kiflu Kidane and his band New
Nile Orchestra inspire even the most committed wall-flower to get up and
dance! A former principal dancer in the Ethiopian National Dance Theatre,
Kidane started his band in 1991 to provide polyrhythmic music he could dance
to. With infectious rhythms, Amharic song lyrics, remarkable singing and
dancing, their awesome musicianship combines traditional Ethiopian melodies,
snaky bass rhythms, jazz, reggae and even occasional hip-hop!
Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers

Pioneer of “Latin Bugaloo”, Pucho and the Latin Soul
Brothers serve up a hot mix of New-York style Latin, jazz, R&B/soul and funk
– back by popular demand! This powerhouse band, led by legendary timbalero
Pucho offers everything from Ellington to Mario Bauza mambo classics to
wicked James Brown funk!
International Garifuna Band

The International Garifuna Band is a combination of
the most versatile & dynamic Garifuna musicians in the U.S. Garifuna is the
name of the free people (meaning they were never enslaved) who inhabit
Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and parts of Nicaragua, descendants of Africans
and Carib-Arawaks. This contemporary musical expression of Central America
offers multiple instrumentation, including turtle and conch shells, maracas,
bass, keyboards, vocals and infectious “Punta Rock” dance rhythms.
The evening will end with a musical jam session!
Ethnic foods and beverages available for sale by local community groups.

Charanga, Salsa, Bachata, Merengue & More! This year’s
Latin Fest features 3 fabulous groups that each offer a very different look at
various Latin rhythms & beats.
Andrea Brachfeld & Son Charanga

Andrea Brachfeld & Son Charanga – two-time recipient
of the Latin New York Music Awards for her skill as a flutist, Andrea has
performed with Dave Valentin, Tito Puente, Ray Baretto, and many other Latin
legends. Her fabulous ensemble performs fiery Charanga standards, a swinging
form of Cuban dance music, along with a jazz flair.
La Krema

La Krema, originating in 1996, is considered one of
the hottest Merengue groups in upstate New York. The group is led by Jesse
Pabon who, as a young man loved the sound of legendary groups such as Tono
Rosario, Los Sabrosos del Merengue and La Patrulla 15. His passion grew, and
in 1992 he performed with various groups in Western New York. Jesse quickly
knew the sound he wanted and at that time La Krema was born. The band’s
popularity grew quickly, and they were soon traveling around the East coast
including Toronto and Ontario, Canada.
Los Hermanos Moreno

A constant presence in the New York club & festival
scene, as well as the worldwide salsa touring circuit, Los Hermanos Moreno
has performed throughout the Americas, Europe and Japan. They meld their
traditional aggressive style of salsa with sensual lyrics, and sophisticated
orchestration. With unbeatable swing and the full sound of a large
horn-section, this powerhouse band will have you rocking the Plaza!
Rueda demos, Salsa, Charanga, Merengue & Bachata Dance
lessons by SMAC – Salsa Music Appreciation
Club will have you up and dancing! Children’s Hands-On Craft activities
from various Latin cultures. Latino food & drinks available for purchase.
